Oh, I forgot that gedit is a graphical text editor ... you first need to
allow root to temporarily acces your user's X server (because gedit
needs to draw its output there):

run the following commaand before the "sudo gedit ...":

xhost +si:localuser:root

(With a console text editor like nano or vim this would not have been
necessary)
